Milk is a 2008 American biographical film directed by Gus Van Sant. It is based on the life of the late American politician Harvey Milk, a gay rights activist and the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. The film received a limited release on November 26, 2008, the day before the 30th anniversary of the Moscone–Milk assassinations.
Milk has received many awards, as has its leading actor, Sean Penn- a Golden Globe nomination, three Screen Actors Guild Award nominations and four BAFTA award nominations including Best Film. The film received 8 Academy Award nominations including Best Picture.
